Takehiro Tomiyasu has agreed terms with Arsenal over a new long term contract following reports he could leave the club.

Back in November, it was rumored that the Gunners were plotting contract talks with the versatile defender in order to stave off interest from the likes of Bayern Munich.

Though not an automatic starter, Tomiyasu is a highly valued member of Mikel Arteta’s squad and has proven to be more than capable of stepping in when the likes of Ben White and Oleksandr Zinchenko are unavailable.

But given he is down the pecking order, and will fall further behind once Jurrien Timber returns from injury, there had been speculation that the 25-year-old could move on and he was even tentatively linked with a loan exit in January.

His contract was due to expire in 18 months time, and with Arsenal looking to spend big in the summer, this was the ample opportunity to sell him and raise some funds.

That didn’t materialise however, and Fabrizio Romano now reports that talks between the player and the club have now concluded and an announcement over his new deal will be made soon.

It is also said that Arteta has never had an intention of letting Tomiyasu, who moved to the Emirates from Bologna in 2021 for around £16million, go.

The defender, who can play across the whole backline, has made 20 appearances for Arsenal this season, though only one since the start of December thanks to injury and his participation at the Asian Cup.

However, after Japan were surprisingly knocked out by Iran at the quarter-final stage on Saturday, he should be available for the Gunners’ next game on Sunday when they travel to West Ham.

An impressive 3-1 victory against Liverpool over the weekend has put Arteta and co. right back in the title race and they are now just two points off the Reds at the top of the table.
