Arsenal face the daunting task of trying to eliminate European specialists Real Madrid in the quarter-finals of the Champions League with the two teams locking horns in the first leg at the Emirates on Tuesday.

The Gunners dismantled PSV Eindhoven to reach the last eight, while Carlo Ancelotti's team had to battle hard to beat neighbours Atletico Madrid on penalties.

Both teams are second in their respective leagues and while the Spanish giants can still catch Barcelona, Arsenal's best chance of a trophy will be in Europe.

Gunners have to keep it tight

With Arsenal having home advantage in the first leg, they would usually try to pick up a victory and take a lead to Madrid.

That is easier said than done, though, especially with so many big names on the sidelines. Arsenal will have Gabriel Jesus, Kai Havertz, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Riccardo Calafiori and Gabriel all ruled out.

Real Madrid will be without midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni due to suspension, while Thibaut Courtois, Ferland Mendy and Dani Ceballos will all need to pass fitness tests to feature.

Arsenal's best chance of success is to keep things tight at the back and do have the confidence of being unbeaten in seven games.

Ancelotti's side are winless in two games in all competitions, so a draw would not be considered the worst result for them as they try to get back on track ahead of the second leg.

Entertaining evening on the cards

The hosts are lacking options in the final third, but the return to fitness of Bukayo Saka should give them a boost.

Arsenal have had to field something of a makeshift forward line for the last few months, but they have still managed to score in six consecutive matches. Keeping the opposition out has been a problem, though, with Arsenal only keeping one clean sheet in that same span.

Real Madrid have scored in 15 consecutive games, but they have conceded in eight on the bounce, and six of those goals have come in their last two outings.

Mbappe to have his say

Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta will have to plan for a tough night for his team as they try to stop the likes of Jude Bellingham, Vinicius Jr. and Kylian Mbappe.

Mbappe still has a chance of winning the Golden Boot in La Liga with 22 goals to his name. The France international has scored 32 goals in 46 appearances in all competitions and his pace and power should get him into some favourable spots in the box.

The former Paris Saint-Germain frontman has registered at least two shots on target in three of his last four starts and should get ample opportunities with Arsenal missing Gabriel at the heart of their defence.
