Former Governor of Sokoto State and Senator representing Sokoto South, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Chief Ayo Adebanjo, describing him as one of Nigeria’s last true nationalists and an unwavering advocate for justice and democracy.
In a statement personally signed by him, Tambuwal extolled the late Afenifere leader’s lifelong commitment to national progress, recalling his relentless fight against colonial oppression in his youth and his pivotal role in the struggle against military rule.
“Pa Adebanjo dedicated his life to justice, equity, and democracy. From the days of colonial resistance to his tireless advocacy for good governance, he remained a beacon of courage and integrity,” Tambuwal stated.
The senator noted that Adebanjo was not just a political activist but also a mentor and a role model to many in the civil rights space. He lauded his fearless approach to challenging injustice and ensuring that the principles of fairness and freedom were upheld in governance.
“His legacy will continue to inspire generations to stand for what is right. Nigeria has lost a rare breed of nationalist whose impact on our democracy will never be forgotten,” he added.
Tambuwal extended his condolences to the Adebanjo family and the people of Ogun State, praying for the eternal repose of the late elder statesman’s soul.
Chief Ayo Adebanjo, a revered Yoruba leader and a pillar of Nigeria’s pro-democracy struggles, passed away at the age of 96. His death marks the end of an era in Nigeria’s relentless quest for justice and true federalism.
