The 2024 Paris Paralympics began with a colorful opening ceremony at the Place de la Concorde on Wednesday, August 28.

Over the coming week, more than 4,000 athletes from around the globe will vie for medals in 549 events across 22 sports.
During the ceremony, athletes were introduced to enthusiastic fans, and national flags proudly waved. Team Nigeria joined the dazzling parade, led by Lauritta Onye, the country’s flagbearer.
Nigeria’s delegation includes 23 athletes: five in athletics, two in badminton, nine in powerlifting, and eight in table tennis, supported by seven coaches and five medical staff.
Since debuting at the Paralympics in Barcelona 1992, Nigeria has secured 80 medals — 40 gold, 19 silver, and 21 bronze, a stark contrast to its 27 Olympic medals earned since its first appearance in 1952.
The Paris Paralympics, running from August 28 to September 8, offer Nigeria a chance to rebound from a medal-less performance at the recent Paris Olympics.
The nation is hopeful for a successful campaign to restore its sporting pride.
