Terrible curse at CAN

Senegal’s defeat on penalties on Monday confirmed that it was not good to be the defending champion at the African Cup of Nations.

Holder of the title and favorite to succeed it, Senegal was finally eliminated in the round of 16 by the host country. The match against Côte d’Ivoire had started perfectly, with the Lions of Terranga opening the score from the 4the minute, but the Ivorians finally equalized in the last minutes of the match and had the last word during the penalty shootout (1-1, 5 tab to 4).

This early elimination of Senegal confirms the curse that hits the title holder at the CAN. For the seventh consecutive time, the reigning African champion will not see the quarter-finals. To find a defending champion in the quarter-finals, we have to go back to 2010, when Egypt once again retained their title, winning a third consecutive edition.
