Boko Haram and Islamic State’s West Africa Province terrorists launched a deadly attack on troops stationed in Gubio Local Government Area, Borno State, resulting in the deaths of five soldiers, with 10 wounded and four missing in action.

Despite these losses, the troops successfully neutralised numerous terrorists during the encounter.

The Defence Headquarters confirmed the incident in a statement released on Tuesday.

The Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Edward Buba, acknowledged the casualties but emphasised that such attacks would not deter the military’s commitment to counter-terrorism operations.

He stated, “The coordinated attack resulted in five soldiers killed in action, 10 wounded, and four missing in action, while troops eliminated several terrorists and recovered weapons.

“Some equipment, including one gun truck, three TCVs, and an excavator, was burnt by the enemy forces.”

In response, a reinforcement team supported by air components was dispatched to search the area and track the terrorists’ withdrawal routes.

Major General Buba reiterated the military’s determination to eradicate terrorism and insurgency in Nigeria, “It is pertinent to note that such an attack shall not deter the troops and the Armed Forces of Nigeria from bringing an end to terrorism, insurgency, and other security challenges facing the country.”

This incident highlights the ongoing challenges in the fight against insurgency in the northeastern region, as the Armed Forces continue their operations to restore peace and security.
