Toulouse leaves the European scene with honors this Thursday evening, dismissed by Benfica in the Europa League play-off after a frustrating draw (0-0).

Toulouse certainly was not varnished in this Europa League play-off against Benfica Lisbon. Defeated at the wire in Portugal last week, on a penalty conceded in added time (2-1), the Haut-Garonnais showed great resources and qualities on the pitch this Thursday evening at the Stadium.

With 17 shots on goal, including six on target, and no less than 2.20 expected goals recorded by official statistics, the TFC had the opportunities to find the fault, through Spierings, Nicolaisen and Sierro in particular. Only fate, and a bit of clumsiness in the last gesture, decided otherwise.

An honorable journey

Having failed to score in this return play-off, Toulouse leaves the continental scene this Thursday evening at the end of an exciting journey which saw it sign one of its finest European victories – against Liverpool during the group stage. (3-2). The holder of the Coupe de France did honor to his trophy and his European ticket. There remains a big challenge to take on this season: ensuring our continued existence in Ligue 1.
