Days after dropping one of the best television episodes of the year, the stars and creative team behind The Penguin took the stage at New York Comic Con and brought along some goodies. Mainly, a brand new trailer that looks ahead at what’s to come as the show reaches its conclusion. And it looks like a full-blown war for Gotham City.
As one might expect after the events of episode four, Sofia Falcone (Cristin Milioti) has finally decided she’s going to take the place of her father, Alberto Falcone (Mark Strong). Standing in her way is Oz (Colin Farrell), her former driver whose actions changed her entire life. Oh, and who is that on the motorcycle at the beginning of this trailer? Check it out.
Starting at the beginning here—though it’s probably not him, that first quick sequence sure does remind us of how Matt Reeves shot Robert Pattinson’s Batman in The Batman. Dark helmet, fast motorcycle, we wonder if that was the trailer editor maybe giving us a little hint of the end of the show at the beginning. Or it’s just some random Gotham goon. Food for thought.
Beyond that tease, everything in here is basically what we are expecting. Sofia is at the height of her powers. Oz is desperately looking for someone to trust. Victor is getting in over his head. It’s going to be extremely interesting to see how this all plays out, and who ends up on the throne at the end of the show.
Watching this trailer though I did have a question. Can Oz lose? He is, after all, “The Penguin” of the title and one of Batman’s most famous villains. As incredible as Sofia has been on this show, and will continue to be, you certainly get the sense that in the end, it’s Oz, and not her, who is going to be the new crime boss of Gotham. Especially since we know the events of this series are going to lead directly into The Batman Part II. You can’t do a whole show on the Penguin and then not have him be a key part going into the big sequel. And that big sequel can’t focus too much on characters ancillary to Batman, especially after four years at that point without Batman.
But maybe we’re wrong. Maybe Colin Farrell isn’t coming back for The Batman Part II and Sofia will win the day. I’d almost rather see that happen. Luckily, we only have a few more weeks to find out.
The Penguin is now streaming on Max with four more episodes coming starting Sunday.
