Following in the 1984 film’s footsteps, the 2010 remake of The Karate Kid breathes new life into the story of a teacher and his student. Young Jaden Smith plays Dre Parker, who has to move to China for his mom’s (Taraji P. Henson) new job. There, he runs into trouble from a group of boys who take out their strict karate teacher’s instruction on Dre when he falls for one of the girls a member of the rival gang likes. Jackie Chan goes about teaching Dre kung fu as Mr. Han, and he uses unconventional methods. The epic final sequence of the showdown between Dre and rival Cheng (Zhenwei Wang) is enough to watch the film for, but Justin Bieber and Jaden Smith’s post-credits song also solidifies the triumphant ending.

The Man with 1000 Kids – July 3

This Netflix documentary profiles Jonathan Jacob Meijer, a Dutch YouTube personality who has donated sperm worldwide to father a range of children anywhere between 500 and 1000 children. He claimed to have spent 50,000 hours in sperm donation clinics over 15 years. In April 2023, a Dutch court banned Meijer from donating any more sperm due to a civil lawsuit against him. Meijer is also threatening to sue Netflix for the film.

The Imaginary – July 5

'The Imaginary'

‘The Imaginary’ Netflix/Studio Ponoc

The Imaginary marks the third work of Studio Ponoc, an offshoot of Studio Ghibli. The film chronicles the adventures of Rudger (voiced by Kokoro Terada), an imaginary friend of Amanda (Rio Zuzuki) who gets separated from her when Mr. Bunting (Issey Ogata) tries to consume Rudger with his wordless spectral imaginary companion. Rudger does everything to make it back to Amanda, who has recently lost her father, in the animated film, as their promise to each other is to “never disappear.” As joyful and inventive as the film can be, it also deals with existential themes like growing up.
