Now is a great time to upgrade your laptop: The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2024 has ushered in a ton of exciting new hardware, prompting tech retailers to slash prices on older inventory they need to clear. Whether you're looking for an everyday workhorse, a cheap Chromebook for homework, a 2-in-1 Windows PC for drawing, or a powerful premium gaming laptop, you've got options at a variety of price points via Best Buy, Amazon, and beyond. Read on for a list of the best laptop deals as of Jan. 13. (And if you don't see any models that check all the boxes on your spec wish list, come back soon — we're adding new picks every week.)

Best laptop deals under $300

Why we like it

This Dell laptop features a 12th-generation (2022) Intel Core i3 CPU, 8GB of RAM, 256GB of SSD storage, and a 15.6-inch display with a 120Hz refresh rate. It's nothing spectacular, but it's a spec sheet we rarely see at this price point: Most cheap, entry-level PCs under $300 have dinky discontinued Intel Pentium/Celeron CPUs, 4GB of RAM, pokier eMMC flash storage that maxes out at 128GB, and 60Hz refresh rates. (Hell, even some nicer laptops don't have 120Hz refresh rates — M2 MacBook Airs included!) It's marked down to $279.99 on Dell's website, which is an incredible price for this configuration and a $20 price drop since last week.

Why we like it

The award for "cheapest gaming laptop you can snag this week" goes to the HP Victus 15, a 15.6-inch PC from last year with a 144Hz micro-edge display and a backlit keyboard. This particular configuration comes equipped with a 13th-gen Intel Core H-series CPU (the "H" indicates desktop-level performance), 8GB of RAM, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 graphics, and 512GB of storage. It could use more RAM — there are two memory slots where you can pop in a RAM stick, at least — but it's an incredible value overall as-is.

Why we like it

Read Mashable's review of the M1 Apple MacBook Air.

The 13-inch MacBook Air from late 2020 nabbed a Mashable Choice Award upon release for its zippy M1 chip, quiet fanless design, and 18-hour battery life. We're still recommending it years later as the best budget MacBook available, and its 256GB base model is currently on sale for just $749.99 at Amazon and Best Buy (a 25% savings). It's dipped lower once before, briefly hitting $729.99 in early December, but it's still a bargain at $750 — and you won't find a cheaper MacBook anywhere right now unless you go the used or refurbished route.

Why we like it

Read Mashable's review of the 15-inch M2 Apple MacBook Air.

Last year's 15-inch version of the M2 MacBook Air has a slightly larger (but just as pretty) Liquid Retina display and six speakers instead of four. Best of all, it still only weighs about three pounds. Amazon has the 256GB model marked down to $1,049.99, or 19% off its $1,299 MSRP — just make sure to apply the coupon on its product page before you head to check out. This is a pretty sweet buy if you don't want to splurge on one of the newer M3 MacBook Pros, which are probably overkill for most people, realistically.

Why we like it

Read Mashable's review of the Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio 2.

Microsoft's new Surface Laptop Studio 2 is a convertible with a unique pull-forward design that allows it to shift between laptop, tablet, and easel modes — this "makes it an artist’s playground," said Mashable tech editor Kim Gedeon. The configuration that includes a 13th-gen Intel Core i7 H-series processor with 16GB of memory, a NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4050 GPU (a bump from the entry-level Intel Iris Xe graphics), and 512GB of storage is on sale for $2,160.99 in the Microsoft Store, or about $240 off. It was technically cheaper at Amazon at the time of writing, but it ships from a sketchy third-party seller that we recommend avoiding.

Frequently Asked Questions

There are several times throughout the year when we see extra-low prices on laptops:

Around Amazon Prime Day and its fall counterpart (which happened on July 11 and 12 and Oct. 10 and 11 this year, respectively)

During back-to-school sales in July and August (which come to a head over Labor Day weekend)

When retailers' Black Friday and holiday deals are in full swing from October to December

Whenever manufacturers unveil next-generation models

Best Buy tends to be the best major retailer for laptop deals, followed by Amazon and Walmart. That said, all three sell a lot of discontinued models and often inflate original list prices, making their deals look better than they actually are. (Amazon and Walmart are also rife with sketchy listings from third-party sellers outside of major shopping holidays like Black Friday.) As such, we always cross-check model numbers and prices with manufacturers' direct websites and look for deals there, too.

We're partial to Acer, Apple, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, LG, Microsoft, MSI, Razer, and Samsung. They're reputable brands that typically tick most (or all) of the right boxes when it comes to innovative features, durable build quality, and overall value.
