The best referee in the world is French

This is a first since Michel Vautrot in 1988 and 1989, a French referee has been named best official in the world for the year 2024 by the IFFHS, the international federation of football, history and statistics.

The one who led the Euro final between Spain and England this summer, compiled 129 points to clearly beat the Slovenian Slavko Vincic (86 points) and the Italian Daniele Orsato (74 points). Another L1 regular, Clément Turpin, ranked fourth, with 47 points collected.

Controversies despite everything

No one is a prophet in his country, François Letexier is not exempt from all reproaches this season. These performances on the Classic between OM and PSG, with the expulsion of Marseillais Amine Harit, and the recent poster between Monaco and Paris, with the controversy born from the clumsiness of the Monegasque Wilfried Singo towards the Parisian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, have somewhat tarnished the record of the 35-year-old Breton.

Many voices in Ligue 1 regret the lack of consistency in French arbitration – an arbitration of which François Letexier today embodies the figurehead. More than ever now.
