Football authorities are reportedly planning to introduce a blue card, which would be synonymous with temporary exclusion for a player who has committed an anti-playing act.

After red and yellow, blue? A new card could soon appear in the pockets of football referees, and it would therefore be blue in color.

According to the Telegraph, the governing bodies are planning to test a new type of sanction, temporary exclusion, which would be materialized by this blue card. The player who receives such a sanction will have to leave the field for 10 minutes.

This blue card would be reserved for certain faults only: characterized anti-play actions, such as a voluntary fault to stop a counter-attack, or protests that are too virulent. It would make it possible to better sanction certain phases of play, which are worth more than a yellow but less than a red.

The blue card tested next season?

The blue card would have the same warning value as a yellow card. A player who receives a yellow card then a blue card will receive a red card. Same thing for a player who receives two blue cards during a match.

The IFAB, the body which governs the laws of the game, could say more on this project on Friday, indicates the Telegraph. The blue card could first appear in football in a test phase, in certain competitions only. The English daily thus mentions the FA Cup as a possibility for this experiment.
