'The Brutalist' Editor Explains Use of AI in Film, Says Tech Helped With Adrian Brody & Felicity Jones' Diction

An editor who worked on The Brutalist explained how AI was used while editing the movie.

The movie has generated a lot of buzz amid awards season, especially for its stars Adrian Brody and Felicity Jones.

In a recent interview, editor Dávid Jancsó opened up about why the team relied on AI tech when finishing up the movie. He also revealed two situations where it was utilized.

Speaking to Red Shark News Dávid said that the team used an AI system to perfect Adrian and Felicity‘s diction and pronunciation since the movie is largely in Hungarian and neither is a native speaker.

“I am a native Hungarian speaker and I know that it is one of the most difficult languages to learn to pronounce. Even with Adrien‘s Hungarian background – (Brody’s mother is a Hungarian refugee who emigrated to the U.S in 1956) – it’s not that simple. It’s an extremely unique language. We coached [Brody and Felicity Jones] and they did a fabulous job but we also wanted to perfect it so that not even locals will spot any difference,” he said.

He continued, explaining that the team tried some other methods before turning to AI. They also opted out of making the changes manually since it would have taken too long.

How was the AI system used? It was fed Adrian and Felicity‘s vocals and the editor’s. The information was then used to smooth out the actors’ pronunciation.

“Most of their Hungarian dialogue has a part of me talking in there. We were very careful about keeping their performances. It’s mainly just replacing letters here and there,” he said.

AI was also utilized near the end of the movie to to create architectural drawings and buildings that were “created” by Adrian‘s fictional character.

Dávid has no regrets about the decision.

“It is controversial in the industry to talk about AI, but it shouldn’t be,” he said. “We should be having a very open discussion about what tools AI can provide us with. There’s nothing in the film using AI that hasn’t been done before. It just makes the process a lot faster. We use AI to create these tiny little details that we didn’t have the money or the time to shoot.”

The cast of The Brutalist was recently on the red carpet at a major awards show.
