EXCLUSIVE: Here’s a trailer for The Divided Island, a doc about the ongoing ‘Cyprus problem’ that is set for a UK cinema release on November 1.

Directed by Turkish Cypriot Cey Sesiguzel, and co-produced by Greek Cypriot Andreas Tokkallos, the film aims to bring an unbiased and shared understanding of a complex issue that divides their people.

Tomorrow (July 20) marks the 50th anniversary of Turkish invasion and claiming 3% of Cyprus in response to a coup d’état backed by the Greek military junta that led the country between 1967 and 1974. Nicosia remains Europe’s only divided capital, with the north largely inhabited by Turkish Cypriots and the south. by Greek Cypriots.

The Divided Island aims to foster a narrative that aims towards a peaceful future solution. It challenges often-hostile narratives in the media, focusing instead on the pursuit of truth through deeply personal interviews from those whose lives, homes, and country were torn apart, and younger generations of Cypriots who year for a peaceful reconciliation.

“The subject matters the film deals with are relevant to everyone, regardless if they have any connection to Cyprus or not,” said Sesiguzel. “Ultimately, I hope the documentary highlights the humanity and complexity of this issue in a way that sparks conversations for generations to come.”

London-based Two Fresh Productions is debuting with the feature doc.
