There is no real morality in football, only performances which guide reasoning. After a difficult time in Mexico, and a mixed start to his adventure at Udinese, it was difficult to imagine Florian Thauvin one day applying again for the French team, or at least seeing his candidacy be considered by Deschamps. However, the 2018 world champion has not disappeared from the coach’s radar, as evidenced by his pre-selection during this October gathering, a reward after a great start to the season in Serie A. Captain of his club, Thauvin attacked this new year with gusto, and his 3 goals, coupled with his superb assist against Lazio in August, have a lot to do with the success of Udinese, 5th in Serie A today.
In an interview given to the Gazzetta dello Sportthe international tricolor returned to this prosperous period, and to his desire to return to the selection: “returning to the Blues would be the greatest satisfaction of my career, which has been a series of continuous ups and downs. My whole life has been difficult, but this summons would show that work pays off in the end.he declared in an interview carried out just before Deschamps’ list. Today I think I’m stronger. Stronger because I have more experience and I learned a new way of playing. It wasn’t easy, I used to start further and only refocus afterwards, but now I feel better, and more complete.»
An uncertain future at Udinese
At almost 32 years old, Thauvin knows he is closer to the end than the beginning. And so he invites himself to make the most of it. If he says he is fulfilled in a club which now trusts him, through the choices of his coach Kosta Runjaić who places him at the center of his project, the idea of seeing him take on one last great challenge in the future, n is not to be ruled out. “My contract with Udinese expires in June. I feel really good here, but I always said that a top player aspires to play as high as possible. I don’t know how it will go, but I certainly feel like a top player at the club (…) The captaincy is a new experience for me. I enjoy my relationship with my teammates”he declares.
Without completely opening the door to a departure, Thauvin remains well aware that his performances will not leave anyone indifferent in Europe. As in 2021, when he left OM, who had given ideas to several big clubs, including AC Milan, his dream still today: “Marseille offered me another five-year contract, then Lyon called me, I had spoken with Giuntoli, who was at Naples. I also spoke with Maldini, who wanted me at Milan, the team that would have been, and still is, my dream. Atletico Madrid wanted me too. But after Covid, all the clubs were in a difficult economic situation. The train could come back a second time.
