Nearly a full decade ago, TNT aired The Librarians, a spinoff for a series of popular TV movies on the same channel. The show built up a solid fanbase, and after ended in 2018, that seemed to be the end of things. But good news: The Librarians are returning once more, and they’re even coming back to their home network.
Just before the weekend, Electric Entertainment announced the new show, Librarians: The Next Chapter, will be airing on TNT next year. Before this point, it was slated to air on the CW, which picked up the show back in 2023. But recently, the network indefinitely pulled the show from its schedule ahead of its October 24 premiere for currently unknown reasons. And according to Deadline, TNT is so in on Next Chapter that it’s already given the green light for a second 12-episode season as the first is currently in post-production.
Next Chapter centers on a medieval era Librarian (played by Callum McGowan) who accidentally time travels to the present. After accidentally awakening magical artifacts from a museum, the old Librarian has to work with a new team to set things right. Fellow cast stars include Jessica Green, Olivia Morris, and Bluey Robinson, and Librarians alum Christian Kane will reprise his role of Jacob Stone in a guest role at some point in the series.
Franchise producer Dean Devlin said the surprise save “holds immense significance for us, and we’re thrilled by TNT’s dedication to fans by offering them the continuation of one of their beloved fantasy series.” He later told Deadline it was all thanks to longtime network general manager Sam Linsky, who he said he been team Librarians “from the very, very beginning.” In Devlin’s telling, Linsky called him up and just asked if it would be possible to bring Next Chapter from The CW over to TNT, and the former “understood that the idea of bringing the show home was an amazing opportunity.”
Expect Librarians: The Next Chapter to hit TNT sometime in 2025.
