The 2024 summer transfer window has long been closed in all major European leagues and clubs cannot sign new players until January unless they are free.
Last summer saw spending decline across the board, with Premier League and Saudi Pro League teams holding back slightly after spending immense sums in 2023.
For the first time in several years there were no transfers worth more than €100m, with the most expensive transfer seeing Julian Alvarez join Atlético Madrid from Manchester City for €75m euros. Indeed, only one transfer (Alvarez) made the list of the 50 most expensive transfers of all time.
The January 2024 transfer window has also been a quiet affair, with Vitor Roque’s transfer to Barcelona for €40 million being the most expensive transfer in world football.
However, January 2025 promises to be an intriguing transfer window and several high-profile deals are likely to be completed.
Manchester City want to sign a replacement for Rodri, who suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury, Chelsea are looking for a top striker and Manchester United need a left-back – to name just a few clubs on the walk.
