The public television channel ARD caused a scandal in Germany after relaying a survey suggesting that white-skinned players would be lacking in the selection.

Do we need more white players in the selection? » Here is one of the questions asked to a panel of 1,304 Germans a few days before Euro 2024, which the Mannschaft is preparing to play at home. This was part of a survey carried out and broadcast by the public television channel ARD.

Commissioned from the Infratest dimap institute for the purposes of a documentary entitled “Unity, law and diversity, the national team between racism and identification”, the said survey and its controversial question garnered 21% of responses in the affirmative. A result which did not fail to disturb Julian Nagelsmann’s players.

Nagelsmann angry

Just the wording of the question is madnesssays the German coach. I was shocked. I hope I never have to read this kind of crappy survey again! » « We are all relatively intelligent people, we all know that (racism, editor’s note) exists all over the world. We didn’t need this surveyadds international midfielder Ilkay Gündogan in the pages of Bild. It’s still sad that we still do such polls and give them this importance. What bothers me is the timing. For what ? Whoever does this has an intention behind it, it is also a message somewhere. »

Response from the person concerned, the author of the documentary Philipp Awounou in this case: “ As disturbing as phrases like “I would prefer to see more white players in the national team” are, racist attitudes need to be examined to verify them. This is a normal process in scientific opinion surveys », assures the journalist to Spiegel.
