Barcelona and Getafe are set to lock horns tomorrow night at Esatdi Olimpic Lluis Companys in what will be the Catalans’ first home game in close to a month.
Flying with six wins in as many games, the Blaugrana are looking to gun down a seventh straight victory in the league and near their best-ever start to a La Liga campaign.
Ahead of the clash against Getafe, however, MARCA bring to light an interesting anecdote relating Barcelona, Getafe and Hansi Flick which adds considerable backstory to the upcoming game.
The seed that was planted
As revealed by the Spanish outlet, Hansi Flick owned a sports store in Germany 18 years ago, and as a result, earned annual trips to attend some special games in Europe from Nike’s side.
In March 2006, he was given the opportunity to visit Barcelona and spectate the Catalans’ clash against Getafe in La Liga.
On the night, goals from Giuly and Samuel Eto’o helped the Catalans to a 3-1 win with players like Andres Iniesta, Ronaldinho and Carles Puyol all featuring.
It was on that night that Flick made it his goal to coach Barcelona one day, a post he today has made a great start at.
“When I saw the match I thought that one day I wanted to be a coach here and I have achieved it,” he explained a few months ago when he signed for the club.
Tomorrow’s clash, thus, is special in many ways for Flick. After all, it is the first time he will oversee Barcelona from the sidelines in a repeat of the same game that sowed the seed of thought in his mind.
The team that Flick watched 18 years ago went on to win La Liga, the UEFA Champions League and the Super Cup and the manager will hope he can take the team to similar successes now that he is in charge.
