Barcelona’s inability to replace Sergio Busquets created a void that has still not been filled. The Catalans struggled in the defensive midfield department through last season, and all signs pointed to it being the priority this summer.

The unfolding of the Euro, however, appears to have tweaked the management’s priority with the club now pushing for signings in the final third.

One is forced to wonder if Hansi Flick has a plan to fix the team’s Achilles heel, and SPORT provides an update on the same.

The change in dynamic

Earlier this year, Guido Rodriguez was seen as a top target for the Blaugrana with former manager Xavi seeing the Argentine midfielder to be an able pivot to balance his setup.

Flick’s arrival, however, distanced Rodriguez from the Catalan capital to a point where he is no longer considered an option.

As revealed by the Spanish outlet, the new coach sees a fundamental change in dynamic to justify his decisions.

The German tactician has always been a strong advocate of the 4-2-3-1 setup with a double-pivot.

His decision to reject Rodriguez as a potential signing lines up with the same ideology as he does not require a positional pivot to single-handedly cover the responsibility.

Keeping the altered dynamic in mind, the club’s pursuit of N’Golo Kanté begins to make sense for the French star is one of the best in the world in a balanced double-pivot.

The in-house solutions

The Spanish outlet further informs that Flick’s stance of prioritizing the forward department also stems from his relative satisfaction with options in midfield.

Indeed, the club can do with a more established name to man the double pivot. However, Flick sees several players in the current squad to possess able profiles to fill the void.

Andreas Christensen, Frenkie de Jong, Pedri, Gavi, and Ilkay Gündogan are all options Flick considers to deploy in the double pivot.

Moreover, the manager even undid the seemingly certain departure of Oriol Romeu, sending a strong message.
