Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson has rightfully made his spot among the legends of wrestling. He recently made his way back to WWE television after a period of absence and it has been off to a rocky start.
The Rock faced serious backlash from fans after he apparently claimed Cody Rhodes’ spot at WrestleMania 40. However, at the kick-off press event for WrestleMania 40 it was announced that Cody would retain his spot and finish his story.
After all that drama surrounding The Rock’s return to WWE, he has finally shared what led to his decision for a comeback. Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, The Rock said that his decision to return was mainly because he loves being a part of the wrestling world. He added that regardless of his busy schedule and other commitments, he’ll always be a pro-wrestler in “heart and attitude.”
“I love it, I love what I do, I love this world of wrestling, I love pro wrestling, I was born into pro wrestling, I will always be a pro wrestler at heart and in attitude too.”
In addition to his return to wrestling, The Rock also took charge as the TKO Board of Directors to help continue to grow wrestling. While speaking to the outlet, he also reflected on his wrestling legacy and what he hopes to achieve with WWE moving forward.
“I have never seen that picture before and I was so choked up… I was really moved, In that moment, I thought, ‘Man, they were wrestling in what was a field house back then and wrestling has changed!’ My dad just made history and the bumps and the bruises and the sacrifices that he made and that all those guys made. Now we’re talking about the biggest WrestleMania of all time and the company signs a $5 billion deal with Netflix. It’s just incredible.”
“I’m so grateful for the work that he put in and the ground that he laid, [with] my grandfather and all the other wrestlers, But also, I’m so grateful to come back in this capacity that I could come back and give to this business and give to the men and women in that locker room, and try and do my little part to do this with everything and create greater opportunities for all of them.”
Meanwhile, WrestleMania XL is set to go down April 6-7 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Rock’s return and joining the board of directors adds an extra layer of anticipation for the event. It remains to be seen how The Great One’s story unfolds as the road to WrestleMania continues.
