Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is catching heat online after comparing his upcoming film, Red One, to Christopher Nolan’s critically acclaimed Oppenheimer. Johnson’s comment about the two films has left many fans scratching their heads—and others outright laughing.
The conversation started when IMAX shared a clip of Johnson recounting a visit to see Oppenheimer while filming Red One. The wrestler-turned-actor revealed that he watched the film at the same theater Nolan frequents and even sat in the director’s preferred seat. Impressed by what he saw, Johnson claimed that showing Red One in an IMAX theater would be “game over,” implying that his Christmas action flick could deliver a similarly grand visual experience.
While Johnson clearly intended to highlight the visual spectacle of Red One, the comparison to Oppenheimer, one of the most visually and thematically profound films of recent times, didn’t sit well with fans. Viewers took to X (formerly Twitter) to troll the actor for putting his film in the same league as Nolan’s masterpiece.
Movie-focused account DiscussingFilm fueled the chatter by pointing out that Red One currently holds just a 36% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, a stark contrast to Oppenheimer’s glowing 93%. This detail was enough to embolden more critical comments from fans, some of whom labeled Johnson “delusional” for making the comparison.
Oppenheimer, which featured an all-star cast including Cillian Murphy, Matt Damon, Florence Pugh, Robert Downey Jr., Emily Blunt, and Gary Oldman, was a massive hit, alongside Barbie, bringing audiences back to theaters in droves last year. In contrast, Red One hasn’t been slated for as grand an IMAX release, but die-hard fans can catch it in theaters this Friday and judge for themselves whether The Rock’s statement holds up—or if he deserves a cinematic lump of coal.
What do you think of Dwayne Johnson’s comparison? Is it fair to stack Red One against Oppenheimer, or did The Rock’s take miss the mark? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
