As every year, at the beginning of September, it is time to take stock of the summer transfer window. On French Football Weeklywe also offered you the Ligue 1 clubs’ report card during this summer window. Today, FIFA has released the official figures for this 2024 transfer market. And once again, the clubs have broken a record.

“In men’s professional football, more than USD 6.4 billion (around €5.8 billion, editor’s note) was spent on transfer fees, the second highest total ever. More than 10,900 international transfers were completed in men’s professional football, which is an all-time high.” World football’s governing body also revealed spending by country.

France spends more than Spain

Unsurprisingly, England and its Premier League were the biggest spenders with around €1.5 billion put on the table for a total of 526 incoming transfers. Her Majesty’s championship also sold well, with €1.130 billion in revenue. The second biggest spender: Italy, with around €746 million. Finally, it is France that completes the podium with €630 million.

Of these €630 million, half were spent by Paris Saint-Germain (€170 million) and Olympique Lyonnais (€143 million). Also worth noting are the €85 million spent by OM and the €78 million invested by Stade Rennais. Fourth in the ranking (€541.8 million), Spain would have been on the podium if Real Madrid had had to pay a transfer fee to PSG for Kylian Mbappé. Finally, Germany (€517 million) is in fifth place, ahead of Saudi Arabia (€389 million).
