EXCLUSIVE: Specialty distributor 3388 Films has set a November 8 release for Vietnam’s latest box office hit, The Trophy Bride (Co Dau Hao Mon), across North America and Europe, including in the UK, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Poland, Czech Republic and Slovakia. Check out a trailer below.

The dramatic thriller with comedic elements hails from director Vu Ngoc Dang, who co-directed 2021’s Bo Gia (Dad, I’m Sorry), which is Vietnam’s No. 4 box office hit of all time and the first Vietnam-produced film to cross $1M at the U.S. box office. 3388 Films, a champion of Southeast Asian movies worldwide, also handled that title.

When The Trophy Bride opened in its home market on October 18, it topped the Vietnam box office and has since grossed $2.5M as it continues to play. Producer is Will Vu of Muse Films.

The story centers on a downtrodden family, who, in a desperate bid for fortune, risks it all as high-society fraudsters in a daring scheme to make their sole daughter the trophy bride of an elite family. The film is billed as a modern commentary on the traditional Vietnamese belief of “môn đương hộ đối” – a phrase that broadly means a couple must come from similar economic conditions and social status to ensure a long and harmonious marriage; people of different status will have different opinions, causing conflicts and making married life difficult.

The ensemble cast includes Uyen An, who has appeared as a lead or supporting actress in two of the three top box office hits of all time in Vietnam; and Kieu Minh Tuan, a two-time Best Actor winner of the Golden Kite Award (Vietnam’s equivalent to the Oscars).

Says producer Will Vu, “The social topic of ‘môn đương hộ đối’ is very close to all Vietnamese people. I hope the film’s fresh take on this topic will have a far reach and be welcomed by the global audience.”

Thien A. Pham of 3388 Films adds, “The Vietnam film industry is in a growth mode and embracing different genres of storytelling. We’re excited for this forward movement and 3388 Films is thrilled to continue helping independent and international films be more accessible to audiences and at the same time attracting more moviegoers to cinemas with a broader slate of films.”
