Cody Rhodes’ choice for his earned world championship match at WrestleMania 40 may have been set in stone, but The Undertaker recently compared a match between him and Seth Rollins to one of his own iconic Mania bouts.
Speaking on his Six Feet Under with Mark Calaway podcast, The Deadman stated that a match between The American Nightmare and The Drip God would meet the bar set by the historic showdown between The Undertaker and Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania 25.
However, Taker did mention that the match would not have the magnitude of a blockbuster showdown if it was not placed in the correct slot on the WrestleMania card.
“I ll tell you exactly what this is … this is Shawn Michaels vs The Undertaker at WrestleMania 25 until they were gonna put us on third … excuse me?”
The Undertaker’s iconic match with the Heartbreak Kid was not the main event for that year’s Show of Shows. Yet, many would argue that it surpassed the closing match of that card and went down in history as one of the greatest WWE matches of all time.
Moreover, the legacy of that match continued to next year’s WrestleMania, when Taker and Michaels met for the second time in a Career vs Streak match. HBK would lose the match and as a result, he retired from in-ring competition.
On the other hand, Cody Rhodes’ match has been set in stone for WrestleMania 40, but not against Seth Rollins. After the events that transpired at the WrestleMania kick-off press event in Las Vegas, Rhodes will battle against the Tribal Chief Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal title. The match was made official by WWE CCO Triple H on this week’s SmackDown.
