The Undertaker’s dedication to putting his body on the line for fans’ enjoyment has earned him legendary status, where he has worked with some of the top names in the industry, including The Rock. The Undertaker has now revealed that he initially thought The Rock was dead in the water in WWE.

Before captivating audiences as The People’s Champ, The Rock began his wrestling career as Rocky Maivia at the 1996 Survivor Series. Despite portraying a squeaky clean babyface, fans weren’t receptive, and his career appeared to be on a downward trajectory before the arrival of the wild Attitude Era.

The Rock certainly had a pretty bad start in WWE as almost everyone hated his Rocky Maivia character. The infamous ‘Die, Rocky, Die’ chants are something no one will ever forget, especially The Rock.

While speaking on his Six Feet Under podcast, The Undertaker reflected on his initial skepticism about The Rock’s potential. Recalling Johnson’s early days at Madison Square Garden with a unique attire, The Undertaker doubted his chances and believed The Rock was dead in the water in WWE.

“I remember when (he was) coming out in the Garden (MSG) he had the funny colored thing on and whole…I was like this kid ain’t gonna make it, he’s got to change…no, he’s dead in the water.”

He’s the American dream…he wanted to play football that fell through. There are a lot of times when something like that happens people cave and they never rebound and he was just always…even when I thought he sucked, he was always motivated. And he wasn’t like having a pity party, he was picking people’s brains and he was around the guys that knew what the hell was going on.”

The Rock’s father also never told him that pro wrestling is scripted. The Rock is now back in action and made his presence felt during SmackDown this week. We will have to wait and see how WWE will book him in the coming weeks.
