The White Lotus actor Jason Isaacs has shared his own experience of being stalked, likening it to Netflix drama Baby Reindeer, and saying it was an ordeal the police did not take seriously for a long time.
Isaacs told the UK’s i newspaper that the events took place in the late 1990s, while he was in recovery from drug addiction. He recalled:
“I went mad with it. I should have written a film about it. Baby Reindeer maybe slightly more dramatic but not much. I was terrified my house would be burned down or I’d be stabbed. And because it was a young woman the police didn’t take it seriously for a long time.”
Isaacs recalled that police suggested he change his name and occupation to escape the harassment, while a different officer advised to “just knock her out”.
The actor reflected: “They were next to useless, the police. They kept insisting I must have had an affair with her. And I’d never met her.”
The Daily Mail newspaper reports that Isaacs previously revealed that during the ordeal, which lasted years from 1998, he had to take the woman to court ‘a number of times’ to enforce restraining orders, only for the fan to ‘obsessively and constantly’ get in contact once the order had expired.
Isaacs, best known for the role of Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter film series, currently stars as Timothy Ratliff, a financier from North Carolina in the third season of The White Lotus. He told the i that being cooped up for seven months in a Thai hotel resort during filming was “quite the experience”, adding:
“Friendships and alliances and ends of friendships and romances and all the rest. There’s an off-screen White Lotus as much as an on-screen White Lotus.”
