Photo Courtesy of WWEHe was this close. Over the last three and a half years, Roman Reigns has run roughshod over WWE with one of the longest world title reigns in the company’s history. Reigns is on his way to four years as Universal Champion and there is every chance that it could go on for a good while longer. It has been a huge deal, but it turns out that it was this close to not happening.

Reigns’ advisor Paul Heyman was interviewed by Uproxx and revealed that Reigns considered himself retired before he returned to WWE in August 2020. Heyman was the Executive Director of Monday Night Raw at the time while Reigns was on SmackDown and was told that Reigns felt he was done. Reigns would the return and unite with Heyman, winning the Universal Title less than a week later. He is currently scheduled to defend the title against Cody Rhodes on Night Two of WrestleMania 40.

Opinion: This is the kind of thing that makes you realize how much wrestling could be changed with a single decision going the other way. Reigns has been THE star in WWE over the last few years and it is hard to imagine how things would have gone had he stepped away from wrestling. Reigns’ time atop WWE has bee quite the success and it is hard to imagine how it would have gone without him.
