This is so good from Eddie Howe – Just the way that I like it

This is just one of the many reasons why I love Eddie Howe so much.

No matter what the result, what you get from the Newcastle United boss is total honesty.

Win, lose, or draw, Eddie Howe tells it like it is.

So when the Newcastle United boss talked a week ago about what happened at Craven Cottage, he didn’t pull any punches. He said it had been a really poor performance in the first half that had seen the match effectively lost by the break.

Eddie Howe didn’t throw individuals under a bus, as certain previous Newcastle United managers would do in the past, to divert attention away from their own shortcomings.

Instead, Eddie Howe didn’t single out players, he simply made clear that the players collectively AND him as the team boss, needed to do better.

On Saturday they did do better, a LOT better.

Eddie Howe and his players were excellent against Manchester City. Totally deserved the point and on another day could/would have had all three.

By not shirking it when things go badly, that then gives Eddie Howe the absolute credibility to be listened to when Newcastle United do well.

Very interesting I think what Eddie Howe has had to say about Saturday and especially Anthony Gordon.

Eddie Howe reflects on what happened on Saturday at St James’ Park:

“It was a really good performance.

“We committed.

“We were brave.

“That was our best display of the season, no doubt.

“With and without the ball.

“Really good signs for us.

“Anthony Gordon epitomised that spirit and determination to be aggressive.

“I thought that the work he got through was really impressive.

“Big long distance runs prove he is getting back to his best in terms of fitness levels.

“The rest of the team backed that up.

“Anthony probably needed a bit of love today.

“Of course it is difficult for me to love the players all the time.

“Sometimes you have to give them the opposite, in order to get the right responses.

“Ultimately though, it is really important that we love all our players and that we allow them to enter the pitch in a great frame of mind, knowing that they are free to make the odd mistake.

“That they are playing in an environment where they feel protected and loved, I think Anthony has got that.”
