Thomas Doherty is opening up about his time on the Gossip Girl revival series.

The 29-year-old actor starred as wild child Max Wolfe in the Max series.

While promoting his latest TV show, Tell Me Lies, Thomas made an appearance on the I’ve Never Said This Before podcast with Tommy DiDario, where he dished on originally auditioning for a different role, filming an orgy scene, the show getting canceled and even what happened when he met original Gossip Girl star Ed Westwick, who his character was very similar to.

“It was really cool. And then playing the character of Max was so fun. Really was really fun. He was a wild cat,” Thomas shared. “I remember I auditioned for Eli [Brown]‘s part, for Obie, and they’re like, no, no, this doesn’t work. You’re THIS guy. And then I read that guy [Max] and I was like, oh, Jesus…am I that guy? But I dove in and I became that guy.”

“I remember when there was an orgy on set, in the script. There’s loads of naked bodies lying around and stuff, and I was sitting on the couch and there’s this panning shot that kind of captured all of them. And then eventually it ended up to me just sitting there,” he continued. “And then they called cut and so everyone like got up and got their stuff and got the robes on. And I just sat there and they were like, do you want your robe? I was like, honestly, I mean, we’re two years in… no, I’m fine. Everyone has seen everything anyway.”

If you missed it, during a break from filming in season one, Thomas was seen wearing just his underwear and a robe!

On the show’s cancelation after two seasons, Thomas dished, “Yeah. I mean, it’s always hard, though, when you try and reboot something that’s just perfect, as someone put on my Instagram. When you watched the original, you had to tune in at 8 p.m. every Thursday, and then you’d go to school or work and talk about it, you know, and you had your shows and they came on a specific time. Whereas now there’s streamers, there’s thousands of things and people are all watching different things. And I think it’s just so saturated now that that shock factor just didn’t come through of the reboot. Coupled with the fact that there is so much shock factor right now on social media. So it just didn’t have that same thing.”

Thomas also talked about meeting Ed Westwick.

“Yeah, we were in Saudi Arabia, actually. We were at the Red Sea Film Festival. And lovely, lovely guy. Really lovely guy. I wasn’t really expecting him to be so nice, but, just really cool. Really chill,” he said on the podcast. “And I was telling him that I was basically playing him in a reboot. I just wanted to take some of the original Chuck, but then make it lighter, make it cheekier. Because I remember, when I was watching, it felt quite heavy. And the characters were both written quite dysfunctional but different types of dysfunction. And so I thought, the cheekiness lends itself better.”
