Thomas Frank has warned Arsenal and Chelsea that Brentford will always have the final say on Ivan Toney’s future and insists he was ‘never worried’ about losing his star despite strong interest in the January transfer window.
Both Arsenal and Chelsea wanted Toney this month with Mikel Arteta even making the Bees striker his No.1 target – but neither side could secure a deal.
The Gunners had a quiet January amid concerns over profit and sustainability rules and their hopes of landing Toney were blown when Brentford increased his price tag to £100m.
Toney made his return to action in January following an eight-month ban for breaching the Football Association’s rules on betting and has scored in both of his two top-flight games, showing Arsenal and Chelsea what they are missing.
‘Happy? Yes, but I was pretty sure as I said from the beginning that Ivan will stay with us so I was not worried about that,’ Brentford boss Frank said about Toney.
‘In general, it is nice to know what you are working with so in that situation, yes [I am happy].
‘At the end of the day we decide if they leave or not.’
Frank may not be able to relax for too long, though, amid reports that Manchester United are keeping tabs on Toney ahead of the summer.
United are monitoring Toney’s situation at Brentford for the remainder of the season with the view to signing a new striker.
Toney scored 20 Premier League goals for Brentford last season in an impressive campaign.
