Last night was one to forget for FC Barcelona as they suffered a 4-2 defeat at the hands of Athletic Club (after extra time) in the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey away at San Mames.
Apart from being eliminated from the tournament, Barça were handed fresh injury issues from the game against Ernesto Valverde’s men, leading to major concerns within the Catalan giants’ camp.
Barcelona are already without Gavi, Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Raphinha, Inigo Martinez, and Marcos Alonso due to injuries, and three more players may end up joining them on the treatment tables.
Balde, Christensen, Araujo to undergo tests today
Indeed, as per Mundo Deportivo, three Barcelona defenders – Alejandro Balde, Andreas Christensen, and Ronald Araujo, are all set to undergo tests today after suffering fitness problems during the Athletic Club clash.
Balde was the first player to go down injured, with the 20-year-old being taken off in the first period itself due to a thigh issue. The left-back was wincing in pain and in tears as he walked off the pitch.
The issue seems a concerning one and Balde is certain to miss at least a few matches.
As for Christensen, the defender had returned last night after missing the Real Betis game due to some discomfort. But late in the second half he had to be taken off with a potential calf issue.
After being replaced by Pau Cubarsi, Christensen was spotted icing the affected area on the bench and he will undergo further examinations today to determine the extent of the injury.
Meanwhile, Araujo took a blow to his knee during the game but opted to soldier on for the rest of the match. However, in his post-match interview, he revealed that he has been struggling with a knee issue for two weeks now.
As such, he too will undergo tests today to determine the issue and the extent of it.
