If things stand as they are, Xavi Hernandez will not be the manager of FC Barcelona in four months.
The Spanish tactician revealed his decision to step down as the coach earlier this season after a rough patch of results and is understandably now hesitant to go back on it despite the team’s recent purple patch.
Xavi has repeatedly reiterated that his decision is binding and that no change will see him continue at the club of his dreams. David Bernabeu of SPORT, however, reveals three conditions that, if met, could change his mind.
Condition 1: Form
Barcelona have seen a resurgence in recent games, and while correlation may not imply causation, it appears to the naked eye that Xavi’s announcement of his departure has something to do with it.
All of a sudden, the Catalans have stepped up in defence, Robert Lewandowski has returned to his best in front of goal while the overall play appears more cohesive than before.
Barcelona are unbeaten since Xavi made his career-altering announcement and have maintained five clean sheets in seven games ever since.
The first condition that must be met for Xavi to consider continuing, thus, is that the team continues in good form until the end of the season across all competitions.
Condition 2: Official request
Should Barcelona live up to the expectations on various fronts and make a good run until the end of the season, Xavi’s continuity still would not be guaranteed.
Having been made the scapegoat for the team’s inefficiencies so often, the club legend is not one to turn around on his own.
As such, Xavi would require an official request issued from the club offices, one that he would consider accepting.
Condition 3: Finances
Looking forward to next season, Barcelona will need some big signings in selective positions to remain competitive at the highest level.
A defensive midfielder, Joao Cancelo, a new winger and a left-back are the club’s primary targets for any new manager coming in, and Xavi is no different.
For Xavi to stay, the legendary midfielder would thus need to know if Barça will have the money required to bring in the targeted players or not. The pressure on that front lies on Joan Laporta.
