Three players Barcelona have to sell in order to sign Nico Williams and Dani Olmo

Barcelona are preparing some major moves in the transfer market in the coming days with club president Joan Laporta giving the green light to go after two top names in the form of Nico Williams and Dani Olmo.

Both players starred for Spain at the UEFA Euro 2024 and their performances on the biggest stage have only strengthened the Catalans’ resolve to acquire their services despite the financial challenges they are facing.

It goes without saying that Barcelona would have to clear some room from the current squad if they are to accommodate both Olmo and Williams for next season.

As such, here are three players the Blaugrana would likely have to sell in order to welcome both the Spanish forwards to the club this summer.

Two new faces in attack would mean that Barcelona would have to make cuts in the department in order to avoid overbooking in the area. And the most obvious name to be sold in that scenario would be Ansu Fati.

Back after a disappointing season on loan at Brighton, Ansu has been motivated to prove himself to new manager Hansi Flick and has been working hard to improve himself physically and make an impression in pre-season.

But if both Nico and Olmo were to arrive, Fati would be starved of minutes at Barça and offloading him would make the most sense for the club as well as the player.

Raphinha

Another forward who could become surplus to requirements to if Barcelona sign both Nico and Olmo would be Raphinha. The Brazilian is already behind Lamine Yamal in the pecking order on the right flank and had to play on the left side at times last season.

Should Nico arrive, the left-wing would become his spot and with Olmo being able to play anywhere in attack, Raphinha would fall another rung or two down on the order of preference.

The 27-year-old has suitors in the Premier League and Saudi Arabia who are ready to splash the cash on his signing, making his exit a logical option. But with the player reluctant to leave, Deco & co. would have their task cut out to convince him.

Ilkay Gundogan

The veteran midfielder has been at Barcelona for only one season and enjoyed a solid debut season, making value contributions in attack while adding his experience and leadership to the table.

However, with Barcelona set to make changes to the way they operate under Hansi Flick, Gundogan might not be best suited to the demands of playing in the double pivot in midfield while he would be behind Pedri and possibly Olmo in the No. 10 role.

Furthermore, his high wages would also become an issue for Barça and as such an exit could be considered, especially if Barcelona succeed in signing Olmo.
