Aleix Garcia was one of many midfielders who were shortlisted by Barcelona in January, in their attempt to shore up the ranks in the middle of the park.
Although Barça were not able to strike a deal with Girona for Garcia, the midfielder pretty much remains a target for the Catalans, as confirmed by Deco in a recent interview.
A recent report from Mundo Deportivo has now highlighted three reasons why Barcelona have retained their interest in Garcia and could go after the Girona star in the summer.
Gavi’s slow recovery
Barcelona were dealt with a major blow in November when Gavi picked up a serious ACL injury.
It wasn’t long before it was revealed that the young midfielder would be out for at least a year. That means Gavi will not only miss the remainder of the campaign but also a chunk of next season as well.
Barcelona, for their part, do not want to take any risks with the young Spaniard and would not rush to bring him back into the field. As a result, the club are open to signing Garcia, who will multiply the options available in the middle of the park.
Caution with Pedri
Pedri has endured a couple of unfortunate years. Although the youngster has continued to establish himself as one of the best talents in world football, his fitness has been a bit of a concern lately.
After succumbing to muscular injuries in 2021, Pedri has often aggravated his problems and has had to spend time on the sidelines quite frequently.
With that in mind, Barcelona want to sign Aleix Garcia in order to add further depth in midfield and to always have a craft alternative for Pedri.
Ilkay Gundogan’s age
Another factor playing a key role in forcing Barcelona to go after someone like Aleix Garcia is Ilkay Gundogan.
The German international has done a solid job since joining the club last summer. But at 33, he is not getting any younger.
In fact, Barça might even be open to selling Gundogan this summer, should any club come up with a lucrative valuation.
Keeping that in mind, Barcelona consider it imperative to sign someone like Garcia, not only to add more zest in midfield but make the unit future-proof.
