EXCLUSIVE: After making her feature directorial debut with Winter Spring Summer or Fall, a Paramount coming-of-age drama starring Jenna Ortega that world premiered at this year’s Tribeca Festival, veteran screenwriter Tiffany Paulsen has inked a deal to script In a Holidaze, a feature adaptation of the New York Times bestselling holiday rom-com novel of the same name, which is in early development at Netflix.
In the story billed as Love Actually meets Groundhog Day, it’s the most wonderful time of the year…but not for Maelyn Jones. She’s living with her parents, hates her going-nowhere job, and has just made a romantic error of epic proportions. While on a Christmas trip at her family’s favorite snowy Utah cabin, she makes a plea to the universe to help her find happiness, resulting in a holiday time-loop from which she cannot escape.
The novel comes from Christina Lauren, the pen name for longtime writing partners Christina Hobbs and Lauren Billings, who between them, have produced 20 New York Times bestsellers. Alloy Entertainment‘s president and chief creative officer Leslie Morgenstein will produce alongside the company’s EVP Film, Elysa Koplovitz Dutton.
Currently adapting Lynne Painter’s bestselling romance Mr. Wrong Number, with an eye to direct, Paulsen earlier this year wrote the female-driven comedy Reunion for Netflix. Previously, she’s also written a pair of Emma Roberts rom-coms: Holidate, which premiered at #1 and was the fourth most-watched film on Netflix for 2020, and United Artists Releasing’s About Fate, which is streaming on Prime Video.
A former Disney/ABC writing fellow and Sony TV Diverse Directing Fellow, Paulsen’s feature pitch The Distance From Me to You sold to New Line with Sabrina Carpenter attached to star and Cartel Group producing. Also well known for writing the Warner Bros. film Nancy Drew and Disney Channel’s Adventures in Babysitting, her directorial debut The Swan won Best Picture at the Los Angeles Live Score Film Festival and was an official selection at numerous festivals, including Palm Springs International. Her debut feature Winter Spring Summer or Fall has not yet been dated for release.
Known for its work on hit rom-coms like Purple Hearts, Alloy most recently produced Sony’s hit horror film Tarot, as well as the Adam Sandler starrer You Are SO Not Coming to My Bat Mitzvah for Netflix. The company is also a powerhouse in the television space, with more than 900 hours of hit series like Gossip Girl, The Vampire Diaries, Pretty Little Liars, You, and more.
Paulsen is repped by Verve and Hansen, Jacobson, Teller. Hobbs and Billings are both repped by UTA and Weintraub Tobin Chediak, while Root Literary also reps Billings.
