That’s a timing issue. There have been all kinds of changes to the WWE world this year and one of the biggest took place last week. In a moment that left WWE fans angry and a bit confused, Royal Rumble winner Cody Rhodes announced that he would not be challenging WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 40. Instead, while not confirmed, it appears the Rock will be challenging Reigns. Now we know a bit more about the timeline.

According to Dave Meltzer on Twitter, WWE COO Triple H knew that the Rock would be returning to challenge Reigns before Rhodes on the men’s Royal Rumble. Therefore, the match took place with Triple H knowing that Rhodes would not be challenging Reigns. It is not clear if Rhodes knew that Rock would be facing Reigns then or not. Neither WrestleMania World Title match has been announced thus far.
My buddy Jay told me that since his tweets are private I probably should note that the idea that Paul Levesque didn't know about Rock's signing with the company and him wrestling Reigns when he booked the Rumble is clearly not the case. He knew exactly what he was doing.
