The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Student Engagement, Asefon Sunday, on Tuesday called on Nigerian youths to be patient with the present administration.
Sunday made the appeal in Makurdi while speaking with journalists during a three-day capacity-building and leadership development training programme for selected student union leaders in Nigerian tertiary institutions.
The training, with the theme, ‘Building responsible young leaders for national development’, had participants drawn from the North Central.
The president’s aide stated that the present administration meant well for the youths and charged them not to make themselves available for use by those he described as ‘enemies’ of the state.
He said, “I’m calling on youths to be patient with the government of President Bola Tinubu because the president means well for them.
“They should not allow enemies of the state to use them because there are a lot of people whose policies and programmes of this government do not tally with theirs.
“Those who have milked the nation dry are the ones trying to use youths and students to embark on end bad governance protests to destabilise the government.”
Asefon said that the capacity building aimed to engage student leaders and train them on conflict resolution management that will enhance their leadership capacity in the future.
He highlighted the achievements of the present administration in the development of youths, particularly, students in the past year including; the provision of student loans, and huge investment in education through the eradication of the 40 per cent of schools’ internally generated revenue usually remitted to the federal government purse.
Asefon added, “The present administration’s investment in education in the past year has surpassed what former presidents, Goodluck Jonathan and Muhammad Buhari invested in the sector.
Also speaking, the consultant of the training, Solomon Alabi said that the capacity building was to teach the student leaders skills on how to solve issues rather than resorting to protest in their various institutions.
