EXCLUSIVE: Tobias Menzies has joined the ensemble of Ruben Östlund’s next film The Entertainment System is Down. Sources say he replaces Joel Edgerton who had to part ways with the film due to scheduling conflicts. Menzies joins a cast that includes Keanu Reeves, Kirsten Dunst, Nicholas Braun, Samantha Morton and Daniel Brühl. A24 is handling domestic distribution.

The film is another social satire from the director a social satire that is set on a long-haul flight where the entertainment systems fail, and an eclectic group of international passengers are forced to face the horror of being bored.

The project will be Östlund’s second English-language film and seventh feature after The Guitar Mongoloid (2004), Involuntary (2008), Play (2011), Force Majeure (2014), The Square (2017) and Triangle of Sadness (2022). The last two of these won the director the Palme d’Or in Cannes, meaning he is one of only a handful of filmmakers to have won the accolade twice.

Menzies is coming off the Apple TV+ limited series Manhunt as well as the A24 pic You Hurt My Feelings. Next up he has the highly-anticipated Apple pic F1 starring Brad Pitt. He is repped by Cognition, WME and Conway van Gelder Grant.
