The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has confirmed that 40 lives have been lost to the ongoing cholera and meningitis outbreaks in parts of the country.
As health authorities work urgently to contain the situation, private stakeholders, including Tobinco Pharmaceuticals Limited, have stepped in to support the fight by donating essential medical supplies.
Commending Tobinco for its generosity, the Director General of the GHS, Professor Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, assured the public that the outbreak is under control, with only a few suspected cases pending confirmation.
“So what we are having now are just some few suspected cases and samples have been taken for laboratory and when they are confirmed we’ll get to know. As I said the situation is under control. Over the weekend the honourable minister and myself and the team went to central region. For the past three weeks, there have been no deaths so meningitis too is under control”
Speaking to JoyNews, Dr. Christopher Mensah, Managing Director of Tobinco Pharmaceuticals emphasised the company’s commitment to supporting efforts to combat the crisis.
“We are here because we want to demonstrate good citizenship through the effort of our CEO, Dr. Samuel Amo Tobbin. His mainstay has been into pharmaceuticals, that is Tobinco and Entrance Pharmaceuticals.
"So when the occasion called that there was this outbreak of cholera and CSM, then he was moved by his humanitarian impulses to quickly organize most of the medications that he produces from the factory to come support to break this chain of infection and restore health to Ghana.
“Some of the conditions of CSM mimic malaria, so then we also felt it wise that lets make anti-malaria available so that if the person is diagnosed with malaria, then he can get our flagship Lufat suspension and tablets as well. And all these are valued around 250,000 Ghana cedis. And our call to Ghanaians and the general public is that let’s all come and support in whichever way we are capable to break this chain of infection and restore health to Ghanaians”.
The Ghana Health Service is urging the public to practice proper hygiene and seek medical attention at the first sign of symptoms to help curb the spread.
