Tom Huddlestone has announced he has left Manchester United after spending two years with the club’s U21 side.

The 37-year-old, who previously played for Tottenham and Wolves, arrived at United in 2022 with a keen interest in developing as a coach having played the game at a high level.

Huddlestone eventually replaced his former Hull City team-mate Paul McShane in the role as player-coach for United’s youth side.

In their player-coach roles, neither Huddlestone or McShame made senior appearances at United. Their responsibility was to work closely with the academy players – on the pitch and the touchline to help develop their eye from different areas of the pitch. That way they can shape their vision as coaches of the game.

Tom Huddlestone issues statement on Manchester United exit

In a post on social media, Huddlestone insisted seeing out his playing career while working as a youth team coach had been an ‘incredible’ experience.

“Today marks my final day at this incredible football club,” Huddlestone wrote on Instagram

“Over the past two seasons, I have experienced remarkable growth and invaluable learning, both on and off the pitch.

“Every day, I have had the privilege of learning from amazing people, gaining insights into all aspects of player development and well-being. Entering an office environment for the first time was daunting, but from day one, I was made to feel welcome and at ease. I am and will remain forever grateful for the smooth transition.

“For any senior professionals considering a coaching career, I highly recommend taking on a ‘playing coach’ role for a season or two at the end of your playing career.

“This experience has been eye-opening, revealing the dedication involved in planning, executing, and analysing every training session, as well as meticulously preparing for the games schedule.

“These efforts are often taken for granted as a player, so witnessing and participating in this side of the game has been truly remarkable.

“I wish the club every success in the future. Special thanks to everyone in the academy, both players and staff, especially Trau, Demps, Nick, and Macca, for affording me this incredible opportunity.

“Best of luck in the future #MUFC.”

We would like to wish Huddlestone the best of luck with his coaching career.
