Tony Khan is very, very pleased with the signing of Mercedes Moné.
The former Sasha Banks made her debut for AEW back in March. In the TD Gardens in her hometown of Boston, AEW ran “Big Business”, a show designed specifically for her debut in AEW.
While her first few weeks fell flat due to a lack of in-ring action, once she finally started wrestling she became a key part of the company. Mercedes Moné quickly defeated Willow Nightingale for the TBS Championship, and will now defend her title at Forbidden Door this weekend.
The AEW President recently spoke with Sports Illustrated, in the run up to Forbiddden Door. He promoted the event, including Mercedes Moné’s match against Stephanie Vaquer at the event.
He also called Moné “one of the greatest free agent signings in pro wrestling history”.
“We’ll also have the chance to hear from Mercedes Moné, who defends the TBS title at Forbidden Door against New Japan Strong champion Stephanie Vaquer in a title-for-title match. That is going to be incredible. Mercedes is one of the greatest free agent signings in pro wrestling history, one of the most significant signings ever in AEW history.”
This is huge praise for the star, although likely hyperbole to help sell her as a top star in the company. Comparing Moné to WCW signing Hulk Hogan in 1993, WWE signing AJ Styles in 2016 or TNA signing Kurt Angle in 2006 is a huge comparison, but one Tony Khan seems happy to make. That must show the faith he has in the CEO to take AEW to the next level.
