Tony Khan says he was thrilled to extend Daniel Garcia‘s AEW contract.

Daniel Garcia made his AEW debut in September 2020. He has been signed with the company since 2021. On the October 8 episode of AEW Dynamite, Daniel Garcia announced that he was staying with AEW. His contract was reportedly coming up in October. Multiple outlets had reported that WWE was interested in him.

During the AEW WrestleDream media call, Rick Ucchino of Sports Illustrated asked Tony Khan about the negotiation process with Daniel Garcia.

“I really like Daniel Garcia, and I completely understand why he wanted to take some time before making a really important decision in his life and career. It’s a life-changing decision. I understand why somebody would want to reflect on these things, especially with something like a major contract year looming. I think it’s a great beacon to our wrestlers, our staff, and our fans when they see one of the great young wrestlers in the sport, somebody that we have really spent time developing, where a lot of our top stars, people like Bryan Danielson and FTR, believe in Daniel Garcia and want to mentor him and work with him.

“It was so great I think for the morale of the company to have one of our I believe homegrown stars, and Daniel Garcia was a top, top independent wrestler when he came to AEW, and we’re very familiar with his work when he came in. That’s why I wanted to put him in a spot when he first arrived, just over three years ago, and work Daniel Garcia in and use him as a TV wrestler because I knew he was very, very talented as a kid. Just to see the development over the last three-plus years in Danny, we’ve all gotten to watch it together as fans.”

Tony Khan continued by highlighting Daniel Garcia’s growth. He said that Garcia worked hard and loved AEW and wanted to be there. Khan stated that Garcia was a positive person in the locker room. He stated that this was the kind of person he wanted to keep in AEW.

“He’s continued to grow and develop and really build a connection with the fans, and you saw that last night and throughout this year, the way the fans have continued growing and caring and believing in Danny more and more, year after year,” Tony Khan said. “I think coming out of the Continental Classic, he was one of the real rising stars. He wasn’t the winner of the tournament, but he also earned a lot of respect and continued getting better and better throughout the tournament. Certainly, somebody like that, that works hard and loves AEW and wants to be here, he’s a positive person in the locker room and just spreads joy in the company and to the fans, that’s exactly the kind of person that you want to keep in AEW.

“So I was so thrilled to be able to extend Danny’s contract and have Danny stay in AEW for years to come. It’s great news for the AEW wrestlers, the staff, for Danny himself personally and his family and for the fans, so I think it’s great. So that’s one of the things I was very, very excited about this week and going into the future is getting Danny’s contact settled.”
