Tony Schiavone began his professional wrestling career in 1983 with Jim Crockett Promotions as a broadcaster. Despite taking a few years off from the industry, he has had a long and continuous career in wrestling. Schiavone holds Vince McMahon in high regard as a broadcaster, recognizing his skills and contributions to the profession.
Tony Schiavone has worked with various promotions, including AEW, MLW, and a brief period in WWF, as well as his notable time with WCW. In a recent episode of What Happened When, he shared his thoughts on Vince McMahon’s abilities as an in-ring interviewer and commentator.
Schiavone praised McMahon as one of the best announcers in the business, pointing out his partnership with Jesse “The Body” Ventura as one of the greatest commentary teams in wrestling history. He compared their dynamic to other legendary pairs like Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby Heenan, emphasizing McMahon’s deep understanding of promotion due to his role in the company.
“I go back, when you think about great commentary teams, I think Vince McMahon and Jesse ‘The Body’ Ventura were one of the best commentary teams ever,” he explained. “Just like Gorilla and Bobby Heenan or Jerry Lawler and JR… Vince, realistically, it was his company, so he knew what to say. He knew how to promote things, so I thought he was great in this area.”
Schiavone’s own experience with McMahon was short, spanning from April 1989 to April 1990, during which he served as the play-by-play announcer for major events like SummerSlam and the Royal Rumble alongside Ventura. He also believes Vince McMahon should enjoy his life instead of trying to repair his reputation. Regardless, Schaivone will always give credit where it’s due and that’s unlikely to ever change.
