Rivers United have refuted rumors suggesting they are in talks to appoint former Super Eagles head coach, Finidi George, as their new manager.
The club, which faced challenges during the 2023-2024 season in both the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) and the CAF Confederation Cup, managed to reach the quarter-finals of the latter and finished 8th in the NPFL.
Following a less-than-ideal season, speculations emerged that Rivers United were searching for a new coach, with Finidi George and Imama Amapakabo rumored as top contenders for the position. However, Rivers United’s media officer, Charles Mayuku, dismissed these reports as “baseless,” confirming that preparations for the upcoming season are underway with training set to resume on Wednesday, July 3.
Mayuku also clarified that star player Deputy Echeta has not left the club, contrary to some reports, emphasizing that only Augustine Okejepha has moved to Tanzanian club Simba SC this summer.
Addressing other transfer speculations, Mayuku debunked claims that the club rejected a $150,000 offer for Andy Okpe, stating such rumors are unfounded. He disclosed that negotiations are ongoing with 13 players whose contracts have expired, including Nyima Nwagua, Kazie Enyinnaya, Victor Sochima, and Abiodun Akande, while 24 players, including five promoted from the U-17 side, have been retained by the club.
