Former Manchester United striker Teddy Sheringham believes Gareth Southgate made the right decision to leave Marcus Rashford out of his plans for the European Championship this summer.
England travel to Germany later this month and Rashford will be disappointed to be excluded from the 33-man provisional squad, which was named by Southgate two weeks ago.
The 33-man included the surprise inclusion of Luke Shaw, who has been missing for months due to injury, as well as Harry Maguire.
It remains to be seen if Shaw and Maguire will make the final squad when it is cut down to 26 players this coming Friday. A decision will be made based on their recovery.
However, treble-winning striker Sheringham has made it clear he agrees with Southgate’s decision to not bring Rashford to Euro 2024.
Speaking to Genting Casino, as per Manchester Evening News, Sheringham said: “Given his form over the year, I think he deserves not being in the squad, but at the same time, he has done well for England in the past. He is someone that is quite dangerous, that you could throw on for the last 20 minutes and cause a problem and score a goal. I’m surprised he’s not in the squad, he was decent at the weekend as well and played a big part in United winning the FA Cup. He’ll be bitterly disappointed as well. Rashford has said he is going to take time away from social media and he needs to do whatever it takes to be fully focused on what he should be doing. It’s a tough game at the top for a professional in any sport. You need to be focused all the time.”
All Rashford can do now is get his head down and focus on the upcoming season. That will be his opportunity to silence critics.
We’ll be happy to see United benefit from that because we play better when Rashford is at his best.
