Barcelona’s pursuit of Rennes’ young winger, Desire Doue, has hit a roadblock, as according to Mundo Deportivo, Bayern Munich have surged ahead in the race by placing a substantial €35 million bid for the 19-year-old talent.

Doue, who recently celebrated his 19th birthday, has been a name frequently linked with Barcelona. In fact, he was spotted at Camp Nou during a Barcelona-Atletico La Liga match in April 2023.

Interestingly, the French media has consistently tied him to the Catalan giants, however, that sighting was a long time ago, and since then, Doue’s footballing prowess has continued to grow, catching the eye of several top European clubs.

Rennes are a goldmine

In that regard, Bayern Munich, however, have taken the lead with their significant offer, outpacing other interested teams such as Manchester United, Arsenal, Atletico Madrid, Napoli, Borussia Dortmund, and Barcelona.

Rennes are renowned for their ability to develop young talent through its exceptional youth system. The club has a history of nurturing players who go on to secure big-money moves to prominent clubs.

Recent examples include Eduardo Camavinga, who joined Real Madrid for €30 million, Mathys Tel, who moved to Bayern for a similar amount if all conditions are met, and Ousmane Dembele, who left for Borussia Dortmund for around €15 million before eventually joining Barcelona.

Now, it appears that Doue could follow a similar path, with Bayern Munich’s offer seemingly out of reach for their competitors.

While Barcelona hold a strong interest in the young winger, matching Bayern’s offer might be a challenge they are not prepared to meet.

Extensive scouting expected during Paris Olympics

Currently part of Thierry Henry’s Olympic team, Doue has shown remarkable versatility on the field. He can play both as an attacking midfielder and as a winger on either flank.

His high-level performances over the past two years with Rennes’ first team in Ligue 1 have cemented his reputation.

His talent was evident from his standout performances with the French Under-17 team during the European Championships, where he scored two goals and provided an assist, as well as with the Under-19s.

Despite his youth, Doue has already accumulated significant experience, having played 76 official matches for Rennes. This includes 57 appearances in Ligue 1, 13 in the Europa League, and 6 in the French Cup.

During these matches, he has scored 8 goals and made 7 assists. Born in Angers in 2005, Doue is of Ivorian descent and turned 19 on June 3rd.

He renewed his contract with Rennes in November 2022, extending it until 2025, and further solidified his commitment by signing a new contract in August 2023, which lasts until 2026.
