EXCLUSIVE: UK-based distributor Trinity CineAsia has acquired Hong Kong action film Stuntman for UK and Irish distribution.

Stuntman releases on September 26 in Hong Kong and opens in UK and Irish cinemas from October 11.

The film follows a washed-up action choreographer who is struggling to find his way in a changing industry. He risks everything to stage a comeback, while also attempting to repair the relationship with his estranged daughter.

The film stars Terrance Lau and Philip Ng, who both featured in recent box office hit Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In.

Stuntman also stars stunt veteran Stephen Tung Wai (The Battle at Lake Changjin), a seven-time winner of Best Action Choreography at the Hong Kong Film Awards. The action flick marks Tung’s on-camera return after seven years.

Cecilia Choi (A Light Never Goes Out) and Rachel Leung (The Sparring Partner) also feature in the film.

Stuntman is co-directed by Albert and Herbert Leung, who are both stuntmen-turned-filmmakers, drawing from their own professional experiences to create the story.

“Following the success of Twilight of the Warriors, the biggest success at the UK box office of a Hong Kong film for over 10 years, we are keeping up the fight with a debut from a terrific duo, Albert Leung and Herbert Leung, from the studio who brought Twilight of the Warriors, Entertaining Power,” said Cedric Behrel, managing director of Trinity CineAsia. “It marks yet another step in our commitment to bringing out great films from up-and-coming directors from Hong Kong, which is teeming with creativity.”

The distributor added that Stuntman “recreates the spirit of Hong Kong action cinema from the 1980s golden era, particularly in adapting iconic fight scene locations such as footbridges and shopping centre escalators.”

Stuntman will screen at the upcoming Hawai’i International Film Festival 2024 as well as in Tokyo, Osaka and Fukuoka through the overseas “Making Waves” program run by the Hong Kong International Film Festival.

Trinity CineAsia has also distributed Cannes Un Certain Regard Prize-winning Chinese film Black Dog, Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In, crime epic The Goldfinger and fantasy film Creation of the Gods I: Kingdom of Storms.
