Troy Deeney revealed that a Southampton fan apologised to him for his side's shoddy performance during their 2-1 defeat to Wolves.

Southampton fell to defeat at St Mary's Stadium to allow relegation rivals Wolves to move nine points clear of the drop zone.

TalkSPORT's Deeney was on the south coast for the game and admitted that a Southampton fan 'turned around and apologised' for the state of his side's performance.

"I've just got to say I've had one of the fans here, about six or seven rows down from me, turn around and apologise that Southampton are so bad," Deeney said.

“If I was ever in doubt of understanding why football is a religion in this country… This is awful to watch from a Southampton point of view, and even as a neutral for me.

“And it's still sold out. It's unbelievable, so fair play to all these Southampton fans, but my God, this is a terrible game of football," he said.

Wolves' opening goal came through Jorgen Strand Larsen, who headed in a beautifully whipped in cross from Jean Ricner Belgarde on the right.

It was the 25-year-old Norweigan's first goal in his last 10 games, despite Southampton having a number of opportunities before that.

The Saints were booed off at the break and things went from bad to worse as Strand Larsen doubled his side's lead just two minutes into the second half.

Paul Onuachu did claw one back for Southampton but it wasn't enough with Ivan Juric's remaining rooted to the bottom of the table with just nine points to their name.

"That sums up where they are at as a club," Deeney said.

"For Wolves, speaking to some of their staff behind us, they feel that they've got to do a little bit more.

"They're taking too many touches, and if they step on the gas, which they could do, this could be four or five [goals] easily."

The Saints have had a torrid time since they returned to the top-flight last season, sitting in 20th in the league and almost set for relegation.

They have won just two games all season, losing 24 and conceding a league-high of 70 goals.

Since sacking Russell Martin in December and appointing Ivan Juric a few weeks later, the Saints have still failed to climb out of the relegation zone.

Defeat against Wolves means that Southampton are now on a nine-game winless run across all competitions.

With 17 points separating them from safety, it means that the Saints will need a miraculous upturn in form if they're to avoid the drop.

Southampton are still two points short of the lowest-ever Premier League points tally.

That was recorded by Derby in the 2007/08 campaign in which the Rams picked up just 11 points in 38 games.

With nine games remaining, Juric's side will be desperate to avoid claiming such an unwanted record.
