TV Talk Podcast: Emmys Comedy Category Is No Laughing Matter This Year With Serious Contenders Galore

Deadline’s TV Talk podcast is back for another season taking listeners all the way to the 76th Emmy Awards ceremony September 15. Strap in.

Hold on, we’re doing this again already?

In this year of two Emmy Awards, Deadline’s TV Talk has returned to get into the small screen candidates, the contenders and the winners for the 76th Emmys.

As you can hear above, it’s all about the very serious business of being funny this week with the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series.

With just days to go before TV Academy votes start choosing who should be nominated, Awards columnist/Chief Film Critic Pete Hammond and Executive Editor Dominic Patten give their picks for the valued spots in the always highly competitive category.

There’s no Barry, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel or Ted Lasso this time round, because, there’s no more of AppleTV+’s beloved Jason Sudeikis fronted football (soccer for the Yanks) series or those other shows now – but there are still a lot of familiar names that are sure to be in the running.

The Bear’s first season won the Comedy Category at the strike delayed 75th Emmy Awards back on January 15, and, while some may debate if the FX show is truly a comedy, The Bear’s second season looks well positioned to be a top contender for the 76th Emmy Awards in September. Abbott Elementary is another past nominee you can be pretty certain will be on the short list this time. The star studded Only Murders in the Building is looking pretty good too.

Larry David’s Curb Your Enthusiasm could get a very enthusiastic response from Emmy voters for its final season, which wrapped on HBO on April 7.  Paramount+’s revived Frasier has legs, as does the streamer’s Colin from Accounts. Everyone has favorites, so let’s not overlook the likes of Prime Video’s I’m A Virgo, the final season of FX’s acclaimed Reservation Dogs, BET+’s hilarious Diarra From Detroit, and AppleTV+’s Kirsten Wiig-led Palm Royale – to name a few.

Oh, and Abbott Elementary’s Quinta Brunson and others from the hit ABC show join us.
